PARAMBIKULAM TIGER RESERVE,PALAKKAD,KERALA,INDIA



         Parambikulam Tiger reserve is the most protected ecological piece of anamalai sub unit of Western Ghats.It is situated in the Nelliyampathy – Anamalai landscape of southern Western Ghats in the Palakkad district of Kerala.It is one of the biodiversity hot spot in the world supports diverse habitat types and endemism.It was declared as Tiger Reserve during 2009 with total area of 643.66 square kilometer,which includes the core area of 390.79 and 252.77 square kilometers buffer area.

       Parambikulam and surrounding sanctuaries are home to 32-36 Tigers.About 39 species of mammals,16 species of amphibians,61 species of reptiles,47 species of fish,over 1000 species of insects and 124 species of butterflies have been in reported from the region.


           A large part of of the reserve is perched on the Anamalai hills which has peaks offering sweeping views of the lush greenery below.Travellers can climb the watchtower to get a panoramic view of the rivers and lush ever green valleys.

Karimala Gopuram (South) - 1438 meters

  • Frequent travelling way of Nilgiri Thar.
  • Lush greenery.

KANNIMARA TEAK


            The reserve credited with the first scientifically managed teak plantation in the world which was later merged with the forest land.Here stands the world’s largest and oldest teak tree.Named Kannimara,the tree is believed to be 350 years old has a height of 40 meters and girth of 6.4 meters.It requires four persons with their outstretched hands to encircle the tree.The tribals living in the forest consider the tree as an abode of celestial beings.Worships and special prayers are conducted here periodically.
